Report from Strategic Development Committee charged with developing a plan to improve and update PWT so it remains a vital organization in a world of rapidly changing media. In a nutshell, we tried to answer the question: who are we and what should we be doing?
I. The purpose of PWT: To promote A. Professional excellence B. Highest ethical standards in communication fields C. Equal opportunities in these fields D. Rights and responsibilities of the First Amendment II. PWT must develop a strong online presence (that’s where the most communication happens at this time) with A. Blogs—not any old blog but killer blogs—such as 1. Articles of interest re: communication, world events, travel, fiction, poetry
2. How-tos re: grammar, design, good writing, recognizing and using credible sources 3. Member’s bios, accomplishments, winning entries etc. 4. Photography/graphics 5. Professional development related to entrepreneurs. Many of the most successful women in communication are full-time bloggers generating revenue from advertising based on the number of visitors to their sites.
B. Twitter 1. Tweets that use quotes or pithy statements re: writing, media, etc. (Check out Publishers Weekly) 2. Tweets that promote PWT members’ books, blogs, articles, etc C. Great web page with promo and links to the above. D. Skype for business: committees, executive boards can accomplish business without driving long distances and staying in hotels. E. Webinars III. Propose changes to bylaws so we have the structure to accomplish this. A. Titles and duties of officers B. Streamline the way business is done so looooong business meetings are no longer necessary. 1. Reports circulated online and/or published to members only page. 2. This would allow conferences to focus on professional networking, growth and development and/or opportunities not available to us as individuals C. Consider different options for membership 1. Online membership (This could appeal to women in more isolated areas of Texas.) 2. Online membership for high school students. 3. Establish groups on college campuses. 4. State only membership
